K-5 Mathematics Resources

Garden City Mathematics Core Beliefs

Garden City Mathematics educators believe students should be able to…

  • explain their thinking and understanding of mathematical content using mathematical language accurately and precisely

  • build a conceptual understanding of mathematics and be able to make sense of mathematical situations

  • develop problem solving skills and be able to apply their learning of mathematics

and believe that…

  • the learning progression should be vertically aligned and developmentally appropriate (i.e. common language, processes, and models).

  • there are foundational understandings that students should master to advance their mathematical knowledge.

In 2022, Garden City Schools adopted Illustrative Mathematics as our primary resource to help execute our vision for mathematics education. Illustrative Math is a standards-aligned, problem-based core curriculum designed to address content and practice standards to foster learning for all. Students learn by doing math, solving problems in mathematical and real-world contexts, and constructing arguments using precise language. Teachers can shift their instruction and facilitate student learning with high-leverage routines to guide learners to understand and make connections between concepts and procedures.

All students will:

  • Develop mathematical reasoning and problem-solving abilities

  • Deepen conceptual understanding, number sense, and fluency

  • Engage in conversation and math talks

  • Learn to work collaboratively

Grade Level Resources for each unit will help support you in understanding big ideas and the progression of learning your child will be engaged in, along with questions and support at home.
