Garden City fourth graders explore ‘The Pirates of Penzance’ through interactive workshops

This past March, Stewart School fourth grade students participated in a weeklong series of workshops centered around “The Pirates of Penzance.” Students had the unique opportunity to work directly with performers from The New York Gilbert & Sullivan Players, including two guest artists who led hands-on acting workshops over two days. The experience culminated in an abridged performance of the show.
The program also offered a strong literacy connection, as students analyzed scenes from the 1879 text, exploring unfamiliar vocabulary, character development and thematic elements. Through this work, they deepened their understanding of storytelling while engaging with a significant piece of musical history.
“For the third year, this project has been one of the highlights of the season, as it is amazing to see our students analyze this rich piece of music history,” said Meredith Lavin, vocal teacher at Stewart. “Thank you to Ms. Regan, Ms. Hand, Ms. Lindsey and the Garden City Friends of Music for making this enriching experience possible.”
