Garden City High School Latin Club students conclude successful certamen season

On March 27, 26 Latin language students from Garden City High School, led by Latin teacher Magistra Durkin, attended Classics Day at Stony Brook University. Organized by Stony Brook University professor Kathleen de Riesthal, the annual event brought together students from New York City and Nassau and Suffolk counties for hands-on activities, mini lectures on classical topics, and certamen, a Latin quiz bowl. All 26 students participated, representing all four levels of the GCHS Latin program, with a level one team and a level two team advancing to the finals.
The following day, nine GCHS students competed in another certamen at the University of Pennsylvania. Hosted by UPenn Professor James Ker and coordinated by undergraduate classics majors and minors, the competition welcomed secondary schools from across the Northeast. Garden City brought intermediate and advanced teams, which performed well in their cohorts.
The Latin Club’s busy certamen season also included fall competitions at Yale University and Harriton High School as well as a winter event at Princeton University.
“I am so proud of our students’ success at this year’s certamen competitions,” Magistra Durkin said. “We look forward to next year’s season and welcome any new members interested in this quiz bowl of Roman history, culture, mythology and the Latin language.”
