Garden City students recognize Developmental Disability Awareness Month

On March 19, Garden City High School students Brendan Ryan and Connor Fitzgerald, along with their teacher, Ms. Bridget Kelly, visited Hemlock Primary School to teach students about disabilities in recognition of Developmental Disability Awareness Month.
The morning began with a presentation from Ms. Kelly, who explained that everyone has different abilities, interests and ways of learning. She discussed what a disability is, emphasizing that while some people may learn or communicate differently, it doesn’t mean they can’t complete something — they may just do it differently. She also explained the importance of treating everyone with kindness and respect.
Brendan and Connor then shared a video they created, highlighting their own strengths and challenges, notable individuals with disabilities and the message to always treat others with compassion.
Students also learned about World Down Syndrome Day, celebrated on March 21, by wearing and coloring “crazy socks.” Each student was encouraged to design socks that reflected something fun and unique about themselves. While the students worked on their designs, Connor treated the audience to a piano performance, playing a piece entirely from memory.
The visit gave students a hands-on opportunity to learn about disabilities, connect across grade levels and celebrate differences together.
