Garden City fourth graders begin Kindness Week with Blankets of Hope project

Fourth graders at Garden City’s Stewart Elementary School kicked off Kindness Week by participating in Blankets of Hope, a service initiative that provides warm blankets and messages of encouragement to individuals and families experiencing homelessness. The project, made possible through a grant, gave students the opportunity to make a tangible impact in their community.
After watching an informative video about homelessness and the goals of Blankets of Hope, a nonprofit organization, students wrote cards with messages of friendship and encouragement and wrapped blankets to be donated to local shelters.
“Participating in this project was such a meaningful experience for our students,” said Brenda McCarthy, service learning coordinator at Stewart. “It helped them see how acts of kindness and empathy can make a real difference in the lives of others.”
By combining service, education and creativity, Stewart’s fourth graders set an inspiring tone for Kindness Week and demonstrated how they can make an impact in their community.
