Welcome Message

Dear Members of the Garden City Community:

Welcome to the 2016-17 school year! I am delighted that you have chosen to visit our website. Our school district is a very active place, so please remember to visit the website often for updates and additional information. You can also follow us on Twitter @GCUFSD. There’s an app for Android and Apple devices, too; the app provides an updated calendar of events as well as links to important district news.

The past school year included many outstanding achievements for our students. Garden City High School continued to be ranked among the top schools in the country on all the well-known rating scales, including the widely followed one developed by US News & World Report. Our students also continued to score far above state and regional averages on every standardized measure of student achievement. In addition, students involved in our research programs at the middle and high school levels reached new heights of accomplishment by taking home honors in a variety of regional and national competitions. Our new engineering program, Project Lead the Way, proved to be quite popular with our students, and students at all schools engaged in many creative projects that integrated science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). Our 1:1 computer technology initiative included students at the elementary, middle, and high schools; this initiative will expand even further in the months ahead. Garden City’s tradition of excellence also continued in athletics, music, community service, and character education.

Once again, the Board of Education’s leadership provided the vision, strategic planning, and financial wisdom needed to sustain programs during a time of fiscal challenge. The Board remains unwavering in its commitment to developing prudent budgets and maintaining transparency. The Board and I hope you will participate in school activities and attend many special school district events throughout the year. We also invite you to attend the Board of Education meetings that will take place on the dates posted in this calendar and on our website.

Best wishes for a fulfilling school year!

Robert Feirsen, Ed.D.
