Dear Members of the Garden City Community:
Welcome to the 2017-18 school year! As we begin the new year together, I look forward to meeting each of you in the coming months.
The recently-approved Capital Projects are coming to fruition, and all work is being completed in a timely fashion. From Kindergarten thru grade 12, physical improvements abound. This is just a beginning, and we will be discussing additional projects at our forthcoming Board of Education meetings; please attend.
Our school district is a very active place: please remember to regularly check our website for updates and additional information. You can also follow us on Twitter: GCUFSD. There’s an app for both Android and Apple devices; the app also provides an updated calendar of events as well as links to important district news.
The past school year was marked by a host of outstanding achievements by our students. Garden City High School was once again ranked among the top schools in the country on all the well-known ranking scales, including the nationally recognized rating developed by U.S. News & World Report. Our students also continued to outpace state and regional averages on all standardized measures of student achievement. Garden City’s student-researchers at the middle and high school levels reached new heights of success by earning honors in regional and national competitions. Our high school engineering program, Project Lead the Way, continues to be immensely popular and will see the addition of the third and final course in the sequence in 2017-2018. Students at all schools continued to show their zeal for projects that integrated science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). Our 1:1 computer technology initiative reached even more students and teachers at our elementary, middle, and high schools; this initiative continued to grow and has now made inroads at the primary school level. Garden City also maintained its tradition of distinction on the athletic fields, on stage, and in a variety of community service settings.
The Board of Education’s leadership continues to provide the vision, strategic planning, and financial wisdom needed to sustain programs during a time of fiscal challenge. The Board remains unwavering in its commitment to developing prudent budgets and maintaining transparency. The Board and I hope you will participate in school activities and attend the many special school district events throughout the year. We also invite you to attend our Board of Education meetings that will take place on the dates posted on our website.
Best wishes for a fulfilling school year!
Alan Groveman, Ed.D.
Interim Superintendent of Schools
