At the Board of Education meeting held on August 13, 2019 the Board of Education approved agreements with AKRF, an environmental consulting firm, and Twomey and Latham, environmental legal consultants. As residents may be aware, at the Board of Education meeting held in early June, representatives from AKRF reviewed a 2016 EPA report regarding the Old Roosevelt Field Contaminated Groundwater Area Site (a link to AKRF’s report, as well as their presentation to the Board) can be found below.
The presentation in June was in response to a community member’s concern about the Superfund Site’s proximity to Locust School and whether or not contaminants could seep through the soil through vapor intrusion.
In the report issued by AKRF, they noted that there was no need for further investigation by the school district. As our district has said previously, student and staff safety is our top priority. Due to this reason and out of an abundance of caution, the Board has approved further testing at Locust and Stewart.
We do not anticipate alarming results; however, we do believe that testing is a prudent and proactive step to take. Testing will be conducted in the next two months. Once the testing is complete, the findings will be presented at a public Board of Education meeting.
