  • *SC (12:1+1) Summer Assignments

    Social Studies SC

SC Global History 9, SC Global History 10, SC US History 11

These courses all have a Current Events assignment to complete over the summer.

Task: Over the summer, students must read and complete a summary sheet for one news article on the topic they choose. (a detailed description of the current events assignment and summary sheets can be found here).

Rationale: This assignment is intended to encourage students to stay abreast of current issues, be informed citizens, and sharpen their analytical skills.  Assessing the reliability of news sources will have a direct correlation to the development of historical thinking skills which are essential to the study of history.  Reading nonfiction/informational texts and responding to issues in the news, students will strengthen their reading, writing and thinking skills – all goals of the Common Core Learning Standards.

The Handmaid's Tale by Margaret Atwood

Offred is a Handmaid in the Republic of Gilead. She may leave the home of the Commander and his wife once a day to walk to food markets whose signs are now pictures instead of words because women are no longer allowed to read. She must lie on her back once a month and pray that the Commander makes her pregnant, because in an age of declining births, Offred and the other Handmaids are valued only if their ovaries are viable. Offred can remember the years before, when she lived and made love with her husband, Luke; when she played with and protected her daughter; when she had a job, money of her own, and access to knowledge. But all of that is gone now…

Students must complete the graphic organizer to prepare for a Socratic Seminar.
