With Regards To The Team Selection Process
- All MS students are required to try out for positions on interscholastic athletic teams. Team selections are based on selection criteria (sometimes referred to as rubrics or assessments), which address the sport-specific skills and abilities needed to play the sport and, in some cases, performance benchmarks (i.e., the level of performance in the skills and abilities) required to make a given team. Students will be notified of the selection criteria prior to trying out. It is the Athletic Program’s goal to maximize student participation in athletics. At present, many of the MS teams can accommodate the large number of students who try out. However, this does not guarantee that every student who tries out for a team will be placed on a team. Student-athletes must demonstrate a strong commitment to both team and player development before being placed on a team. Each Athlete will receive a minimum on 3 days of tryouts prior to a decision being made (*). Furthermore, once a player is selected for a team, it is his/her responsibility to maintain that commitment for continued team and individual improvement.
* This will be further discussed at the preseason meetings with the athletes
With Regards To Student-Athlete Playing Time
- Student-athletes in the Garden City MS Interscholastic Athletic Program earn playing time for game and scrimmage situations by, first, being a member in good standing of the school community. Second, a student-athlete must attend practice and work to the best of his/her ability. Third, a student-athlete must be a team player and execute the specific role assigned to him/her by the coach. Fourth, a student-athlete must demonstrate a commitment to fair-play and sportsmanship at all times. And finally, a student-athlete must support the team by contributing in a positive way to the team’s learning environment. In other words, the student-athlete must focus on learning tasks and assignments and not disrupt other players.
With Regards To Student-Athlete and Parent Responsibilities
- Participation in athletics, even at the modified level, requires a substantial commitment by those involved, i.e., athletes, coaches, and parents. All MS athletic programs will meet either five or six days a week depending on practices or games. Student-athletes need to prepare themselves for this next level of athletic competition by keeping up with their school work and using their free time wisely.
With Regards To The Middle School Eligibility Requirements
- MS student-athletes are required to be a member in good standing in the school academic and social community. Student-athletes must be up-to-date with their academic requirements and performing at an acceptable level for their abilities. Student-athletes must also be free of disciplinary problems and referrals. When necessary, a review of a student-athlete’s case will be handled by the MS Eligibility Committee (i.e., coach, guidance counselor, school administrator, and the MS athletic coordinator). Contingency programs and consequences will be established and monitored by the Eligibility Committee. The overriding purpose of this program is to be pro-active and supportive in its approach and not punitive, thereby helping the student-athlete over-come his/her difficulty. However, in severe cases where the student-athlete makes little or no effort to help him/herself, he/she can be removed from extracurricular sports participation.
Homework Policy:
- If a student is missing 3 or more homework assignments or is late handing in a project the student will not be able to return to play until they are made up and handed in.
Discipline Policy:
- If a student is assigned to a detention or other significant disciplinary consequence they will not be eligible to play or practice the day that they serve and will also be suspended for at least one game.
With Regards To School Attendance
•Students shall not attend any school activities including clubs and sports on a particular day if:
oThey are absent from school that day.
oThey arrive late to school and miss their first period class.
oThey cut one or more classes.
oThey are dismissed from school.
•If a student arrives to school after first period they must provide a physician’s note in order to participate that day.
•Dismissals for appointments with physicians or other administratively approved dismissals will allow the student to be eligible.
•A student must also participate in Physical Education to be eligible on a particular day.
****A student must be in school for at least 4 periods and return before the end of last period in order to participate****
With Regards To Physical Education Requirements
- Student-athletes are required to participate in their regularly scheduled physical education classes. A student-athlete who does not attend or participate in physical education is ineligible for extracurricular sports activities for that day.
With Regards To Medical Injury Clearance
- If a student-athlete receives an injury, he/she may not return to athletic participation until he/she submits a medical clearance note from a medical doctor to the MS Health Office.
- Please go to the Nurse’s Webpage for information with regards to Sports Physicals and Health Forms.
With Regards to student pick-up
- Students will be dismissed from the new gymnasium exits only which are located behind the cafeteria. With the new parking lot and the coaches supervising this area we feel that it is much safer than to have our athletes picked-up here rather than having them cross Cherry Valley Avenue after they have completed their practice or game.
09/13/2022- A FEW UPDATES
Dear 7th and 8th Grade Fall Athletes and Parents,
I just wanted to reach out to inform everyone of the following items:
- ATHLETIC EMAILS:
- Being a parent myself, I am fully aware of the large number of emails that we all get on a day to day basis. To help all involved, any of the mass emails that are sent out to students in grades 6-8 that deal with athletics will also be posted on the GCMS Athletic Homepage. You can use the link below to find them just in case if you were to miss one (or two hahaha).
https://www.gardencity.k12.ny.us/Page/9455
- ATHLETIC LOCKERS:
- Over the last week or so, all of the athletes have been provided with the opportunity to receive an athletic locker located in the locker rooms. This locker can be accessed both before and after school (locker rooms are locked between periods 1-9). Starting tomorrow, for security reasons, all lockers that do not have a lock on them will be bolted. We do not want anyone leaving things in lockers that are not secure. Please speak with your athlete tonight to make sure that they have a lock on their athletic locker if they have already claimed one.
- NEW GCMS ATHLETIC INSTAGRAM PAGE:
- We are launching a new Instagram page for the GCMS Athletic Department. Please spread the word and be sure to follow athletics_at_gcms.
That is all for now……I think!!!!
Have a great day,
Mike Tullo

2021-2022 SCHOOL YEAR EMAILS ARE BELOW
6/3/2022
Dear Current Sixth, Seventh & Eighth Grade Parents/Guardians,
If your child plans to participate on an interscholastic athletic team during the upcoming 2022-2023 school year, please read the following information carefully.
The Middle School Health Office will be conducting athletic physical examinations for the 2022-2023 school year on:
- Monday, June 6th – MS Girls @ 3:30 pm in the Middle School Gymnasium
- Wednesday, June 8th – MS Boys @ 3:30 pm in the Middle School Gymnasium
These dates will be the only opportunity where your child can obtain a physical exam by our school physician. No physical exams will be provided by the district in August or September of 2022.
If your child has practice this day they can receive their physical and then head out to the fields. If they have a game on the day that they are scheduled to come for their physical, they can not miss their game but they can come on the other date scheduled if that helps.
This school exam will be accepted for the New York State requirement for all 7th grade students.
We encourage all our students to take advantage of this opportunity in preparation for the 2022-2023 school year.
If you plan on having your child take the school physical at the middle school, please complete the Student Information and Health History section found on the attached NYS School Health Examination Form.
https://www.gardencity.k12.ny.us/Page/4443
This information needs to be completed before a student comes for the school physical. They must bring the NYS School Health Examination Form with them for the school physical otherwise they will not be able to see the school physician.
If you choose to get a physical exam from your own health care provider, your child must:
- Your private health care provider must complete the NYS School Health Examination Form. This form can also be found in the health office or downloaded from the district website. https://www.gardencity.k12.ny.us/Page/4443
- Bring or mail the completed NYS School Health Examination Form to the Middle School nurse on or before the first day of school. If they are sent in over the summer, please put in an envelope labeled “School Nurse”.
Again, we encourage you to take advantage of this opportunity and hope to see your child as an active participant in the Garden City Middle School Athletic Program. If you have any questions, please feel free to email me at tullom@gcufsd.net.
Sincerely,
Michael Tullo

3/31/22- EQUIPMENT BAG STORAGE
Dear Spring Athletes,
It has been great to see all of you out on the fields, working hard and giving your best during the first few days of tryouts. I am just reaching out to go over a few housekeeping items.
- If you are planning on leaving your equipment in school overnight, it should be secured in your gym locker.
- The shelving units in the hallway between the gyms are only to be used to store equipment during the school day. Please do not leave your equipment on the floor in the hallway, it is a safety hazard.
- No equipment should be left on these shelves overnight. We do not want anything to go missing.
- If you do not have a gym locker and would like one, please bring in a combo lock and claim any locker that is available. This locker will be yours for the spring season.
- Do not leave equipment in a locker without a lock on it.
- Cleats are not allowed to be worn inside the building. Our custodial staff does an amazing job keeping our facilities clean and we all need to do our part to help out.
- If your cleats have dirt on the bottom of them, please use the cleat cleaners that are located outside of the main entrance to the gym lobby.
Thank you for your attention to this matter,
Mike Tullo

Each Athlete will recieve a minimum on 3 days of tryouts prior to a decision being made (*).
- Students shall not attend any school activities including clubs and sports on a particular day if:
oThey are absent from school that day.
oThey arrive late to school and miss their first period class.
oThey cut one or more classes.
oThey are dismissed from school.
- If a student arrives to school after first period they must provide a physician’s note in order to participate that day.
- Dismissals for appointments with physicians or other administratively approved dismissals will allow the student to be eligible.
- A student must also participate in Physical Education to be eligible on a particular day.

10/15/21- NYSED Athletic Placement Process Update
Dear Current 7th and 8th Grade Athletes,
If you are interested in taking part in the NYSED Athletic Placement Process for the upcoming High School Winter and Spring 2022 Season, please refer to the districts 5280 Interscholastic Athletics Policy and Regulation below and send reply to tullom@gcufsd.net no later than Monday, October 18, 2021.
Have a wonderful day,

5280 INTERSCHOLASTIC ATHLETICS POLICY
The interscholastic athletic program is an integral part of the district's total educational package. Its design is to provide selected and more highly skilled student-athletes the opportunity to compete against students from other schools in a variety of individual and team sports activities. The athletic program presents opportunities for student-athletes of Garden City to experience and develop many social qualities which have been proven necessary for success in today's changing and challenging world. These qualities include cooperation and team work, leadership, risk-taking skills, respect for authority, sportsmanship, problem-solving and goal-setting skills, and personal and civic commitment. In addition, athletics provide numerous opportunities for students to grow and mature physically and emotionally, especially in the areas of the student-athlete's self-esteem and self-understanding. It is for these important reasons of pupil learning and development that athletics in the Garden City Public Schools are not considered an auxiliary to academics; they are of equal value.
Various levels of competition exist, ranging from modified middle school teams through varsity teams at the high school level. This wide range allows each student athlete to be placed at a level which is consistent with his or her skill level, physical and mental and emotional maturity and at a level where he or she would be allowed to develop and grow the most. The philosophy of the Athletic Department is consistent with the New York State motto "Let each become all he or she is capable of being."
Adoption date: December 1991
Garden City Public Schools
5280 INTERSCHOLASTIC ATHLETICS REGULATION
All rules and regulations governing the interscholastic program have been established by the New York State Public High School Athletic Association, (NYSPHSAA). In addition, Garden City is a member of Section 8, of the NYSPHSAA, Inc. Both these governing agencies have established their rules and regulations in accordance with State Education Code as set by the New York State Commissioner of Education.
Student Eligibility:
Student eligibility for athletic participation has been established by the NYSPHSAA. In addition, student eligibility shall include:
1. Authorization by the school physician;
2. Written consent by parent or guardian;
3. Approval by the Building Principal and athletic director based on established district, conference, section, and State Education Department rules and regulations.
All students are required to participate in our school's physical education program. This includes all students participating on athletic teams.
I. New York State Selection-Classification Requirement
A middle school student, interested in participating on any high school athletic team, must pass the selection-classification requirements outlined by New York State.
II. Non-Parallel
Certain sports are not offered at the Middle School (golf, swimming, tennis, bowling, etc.). Middle School students may try out for non-parallel sports after successful completion of selection classification requirements.
III. Parallel Sports
If Middle School and High School offer the same team experience, Middle School students will participate on Middle School teams.
These sports include:
Boys- football, soccer, basketball, wrestling, baseball, lacrosse and track
Girls- soccer, field hockey, track, volleyball, basketball, softball, and lacrosse
It is possible, on a rare occasion, for a Middle School student to try out for a parallel sport at the High School. However, the following conditions apply:
1. The athlete must pass the state selection-classification requirement.
2. The Middle School Athletic Eligibility Committee* and the principal will review the request upon recommendation of Middle School physical education staff.
3. The athlete must be of such exceptional caliber to make it possible for him or her to make a significant contribution to a varsity team. Middle School students will not be permitted to participate on junior varsity or ninth grade teams.
*This committee advises the principal on student athletic eligibility. The Middle School Physical Education Department chairman, the grade dean and the guidance counselor are members of the committee.
