The GCMS Speech and Debate Club was founded in September 2016, thanks to the support of Dr. Osroff. The club is open to all students in grades 7 and 8. The 6th grade Speech and Debate Club (starting September 2019) is open to students in that grade only. The 6th grade Club introduces students to the basics of public speaking and debating.
The 7th and 8th grade Speech and Debate Club takes the students to ever higher levels of critical thinking, argumentation, and proficiency in public speaking. There are internal debate competitions with two-person teams.
In addition, we have a Middle School Debate League, currently consisting of Bay Shore Middle School, Amityville Middle School, Mineola Middle School, Valley Stream Middle School, The Academy Charter School of Hempstead, the Waldorf School of Garden City and GCMS. There are debate competitions between schools towards the end of the year, and everyone in the club has an opportunity to try out and be on the team going against one of our competing middle schools. In February, we have the "City Cup Championship" between NYC and Garden City. GCMS will compete against one of the best middle school debate teams in NYS--West End Secondary Schoool of Manhattan (WESS). The winner gets to keep the gold trophy until the following February. Lat year, Garden City took the Cup back from Manhattan 2-1. We will keep it here in February 2019!
The 7th and 8th grade Club is every Thursday from 7:30-8:15 in room 203 with Mr. Cronin, and students in the club are urged to be on time so we can start right away. The 6th grade club is every Thursday from 3:30-4:30 in room 203 with Mr. Cronin. Both clubs begin on September 19, 2019.
