COLLEGE PROJECT LEAD THE WAY (PLTW) ENGINEERING PROGRAM

  • In College Project Lead The Way (PLTW) Engineering program students engage in open-ended problem solving, learn and apply the engineering design process and use industry-leading technology and software. Students investigate a variety of topics and have an opportunity to learn about different engineering disciplines before beginning post-secondary education or careers. All PLTW Engineering courses receive college weighting of 1.06 on the high school transcript.

    Students enrolled in the program will have an opportunity to get a head start on their college career and receive three college credits for each PLTW course. College credits can be obtained from Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) and are transferrable to other universities. To be eligible to receive RIT credits students must have a minimum class average of 85% and pass the end of the year exam with a stanine score of 6. (Stanine score of 6 is equal a C.) The total tuition charge for three credits is $225 payable if the student applies for the credits at the end of the year. Students may opt out of applying for college credit.

    COLLEGE PLTW DESIGN AND DRAWING FOR PRODUCTION (DDP) – 4800     Full year – 1 credit                                                                                    

    Grades 9, 10        Prerequisites:  none; if seats are limited the preference will be given to students with strong math background

    This course is designed as the first in the sequence of engineering courses Project Lead the Way (PLTW).  Students dig deep into the engineering design process, applying math, science, and engineering standards to hands-on projects.  They work both individually and in teams to design solutions to a variety of problems using 3D modeling software and use an engineering notebook to document their work. The course receives college weighting of 1.06 on the high school transcript.

    In addition, students have an opportunity to receive transferable credits from the Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) or other colleges. To qualify for RIT credits students must have an 85% class average and pass the end of the year exam with a stanine score of 6. (Stanine score of 6 is equal a C.)

    COLLEGE PLTW PRINCIPLES OF ENGINEERING  (POE) - 4805     Full year-1 credit        

    Grades 10, 11         Prerequisite: PLTW Design and Drawing for Production (DDP)

    Through problems that engage and challenge, students explore a broad range of engineering topics, including mechanisms, the strength of structures and materials, and automation. Students develop skills in problem solving, research, and design while learning strategies for design process documentation, collaboration, and presentation. The course receives college weighting of 1.06 on the high school transcript. In addition, students have an opportunity to receive transferable credits from the Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) or other colleges. To qualify for RIT credits students must have an 85% class average and pass the end of the year exam with a stanine score of 6. (Stanine score of 6 is equal a C.)

    COLLEGE PLTW COMPUTER INTEGRATED MANUFACTURING (CIM)4807   Full year – 1 credit

    Grades 11, 12

    Prerequisite: College PLTW Principles of Engineering (POE)

    The course introduces students to the high-tech, innovative nature of modern manufacturing.  They will design and build their own automated manufacturing system using the latest technologies, including computer modeling, Computer Numeric Control (CNC) technology, Computer Aided Manufacturing (CAM) software, robotics and flexible manufacturing systems.  Students can earn a virtual manufacturing badge recognized by the National Manufacturing Badge system.  The course receives college weighting of 1.06 on the high school transcript.  In addition, students have an opportunity to receive transferable credits from the Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) or other colleges.  To qualify for RIT credits students must have an 85% class average and pass the end of the year exam with a stanine score of 6.  (Stanine score of 6 is equal a C.)

    COLLEGE PLTW CIVIL ENGINEERING AND ARCHITECTURE (CEA) –        4809   Full year – 1 credit

    Grade 12

    Prerequisite:  College PLTW Computer Integrated Manufacturing (CIM)

    The course introduces students to important aspects of building and site design and development.  They apply math, science, and standard engineering practices to design both residential and commercial projects and document their work using 3D architectural design software.  Utilizing the activity-project-problem-based approach, students will progress from completing structured activities to solving open-ended projects and problems that require them to develop planning, documentation, communication, and other professional skills.  The course receives college weighting of 1.06 on the high school transcript.  In addition, students have an opportunity to receive transferable credits from the Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) or other colleges.  To qualify for RIT credits students must have an 85% class average and pass the end of the year exam with a stanine score of 6.  (Stanine score of 6 is equal a C).
