    Science competitions, contests and special programs for Middle School Students

    There is a variety of science competitions and special programs for the Middle School Students interested in science and science research. Please explore the links below.

    LISEF – SSP Broadcom MASTERS Fair  One of the premium Long Island competition for the Middle School students is LISEF – SSP Broadcom MASTERS Fair. The deadline for the application is usually December and the event takes place in March. Students interested to participate in the competition should speak with MS Science Research Teacher Dr. Zaferiou and Science Curriculum Coordinator Dr. Cascio (cascioe@gcufsd.net).      It is best to pick a topic that has a practical application and/or addresses some important issue. The project should involve formulating a hypothesis and designing an experiment/ or making observations to test it (rather than making models/ inventions or explaining processes). Students have to collect data and organize them in the form of tables and graphs. Large part of the Middle School projects has to be done at home so the parents’ help and support are important.

    Other Science competitions, contests and special programs

    Young scientists challenge  Discovery Education and 3M are looking for students in grades 5-8 to inspire us with their enthusiasm for science. The winner will receive $50,000 in U.S. Savings Bonds and much, much more! To enter, simply send us a video about the science of everyday life. 

    Breakthrough Junior Challenge: Explain any important science concept you are interested in. Your video can take any form you like: animation, talking head, documentary, dramatic reconstruction. For students between 13 and 18 years old. One (1) Prize will be awarded to the Winner consisting of: a $250,000 college scholarship (“Scholarship”) and renovations to the Winner’s school (“School”) valued up to $100,000 for the renovation or addition of a science lab.


    The World of 7 Billion contest: Create a short video – up to 60 seconds – about human population growth that highlights one of the following global challenges: Climate Change, Ocean Health, or Rapid Urbanization and propose a sustainable solution. First place middle school: $500; first place high school: $1,000.

    Bright Schools competition: Students in grades 6-8 will select a topic related to light and sleep and select one of three exploration options (developing a prototype, creating an awareness campaign or writing a research proposal) to create an original project and share their work in a video. For teams of up to 4 students in grades 6-8

    Toshiba Exploravision ExploraVision is a science competition that encourages K-12 students of all interest, skill and ability levels to create and explore a vision of future technology by combining their imaginations with the tools of science. All inventions and innovations result from creative thinking and problem solving. The first prize consists of a $10,000 US Savings Bond for each student on the winning team. The second prize consists of a $5,000 US Savings Bond for each student on the winning team.
    Nassau County Science Competition   Students from Middle Schools and High Schools around Nassau County are invited to present their work across a range of categories
    Long Island SCIENCE CONGRESS is inviting Middle school students (grades 7 and 8) to enter the Junior Division Congress and submit science research projects requiring project proposals, abstracts, reports and oral presentations based upon actual experiments and/or field observations, performed by the participants themselves. These projects require physical displays, the use of instrumentation and scientific materials, collection of field or experimental data, data analysis and representation of findings.
    Ecybermission for students in Grades 6-9: compete for state, regional and national awards while working to solve real problems in your community.

    The Paradigm Challenge is an annual competition that inspires youth to use STEM skills plus kindness, creativity, and collaboration to make a difference.  For ages 4 to 18.

    Disney's Planet Challenge is a free nationwide, project based environmental competition that empowers students to make a difference in their schools. Open for students in grades 6-8.
    EngineerGirl Essay Contest for boys and girls ages 8-15 to solve problems dealing with engineering and its impact on our world. Cash prizes are offered (First-place $500, second-place $250, third-place $100).

    Reach for the Stars Rocket Contest for ages 10 to adults.

    Team America Rocketry Challenge Team America Rocketry Challenge is a national model rocket competition open to US junior high school and high school students (grades 7-12). It is sponsored by AIA and the National Association of Rocketry. The top 100 teams compete for $60,000 in scholarships.

    Cambridge Science Festival’s Curiosity Challenge   Students grades 1-12 are invited to write an essay, draw or take a picture about their curiosity and tell us how it prompted them to explore the world. 

    Neuroscience for Kids writing and drawing contest  Students grades 1-12 are invited to write poems and draw about the nervous system in the style for the corresponding age group.

    Rubber Band Contest for Young Inventors Students are invited to demonstrate their creativity and ingenuity by creating an invention that incorporates the use of rubber bands.  For students in grades 5 - 8. The first place winner in each division will receive a $5,000 savings bond, while the runner-up in each division will receive a $2,500 savings bonds respectively. The top 8 semi-finalists who are not chosen as finalists will each receive a $50 gift card.

    The Kids' Science Challenge is a free nationwide competition for 3rd to 6th graders, made possible by the National Science Foundation.  Students submit ideas or problems in our science fields and if their idea is chosen, they get to visit and collaborate with the scientist to see their idea come alive.  

    Long Island Middle School Regional Science Bowl - The U.S. Department of Energy’s Regional Middle School Science Bowl® takes place in Brookhaven National Laboratory. The top teams are awarded trophies, and the winning team is invited to Washington, D.C. to participate in the National Competition. 

    Future Engineers design challenges for young innovators. Their site also offers you the opportunity to review lots of interesting resources from past competitions including a series of 3D Space Challenges developed in conjunction with the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) Foundation and NASA.

    Junior Solar Sprint (JSS) is an educational program for 5th through 8th grade students with the goal of creating the fastest, most interesting, and best crafted solar-vehicle possible.  Students have the opportunity to participate in JSS through TSA chapters, Army hosted locations and middle schools across the country or through their middle school!

    Lemelson-MIT JV InvenTeams™ are comprised of students in grades 7-10 who hone their hands-on skills and enrich their STEM education through invention-based design activities.
    Future City is a project-based learning program where students in 6th, 7th, and 8th grades imagine, research, design, and build cities of the future.
    Science Summer Programs

    Summer programs at the Dolan DNA Learning center

    Fun with DNA (entering grade 6 or 7) immerses students in activities and experiments designed to build a strong foundation in biology. Through model-making, microscope observations, and laboratories – including DNA extraction and genetic engineering – participants build an understanding of cell biology, microbiology, genetics, and biotechnology.   

    NEW! Forensic Detectives (entering grade 9 or World of Enzymes alumni entering grade 8) is a follow up to World of Enzymes and an introduction to forensic science for CSI enthusiasts. Although DNA is a useful crime-solving tool, it certainly isn't the only weapon detectives have in their crime-fighting arsenals! Through a series of labs and activities, participants will experience forensics in a more realistic fashion than portrayed on prime time TV.

    Green Genes (entering grade 9 or World of Enzymes alumni entering grade 8) introduces students to recombinant-DNA techniques used to manufacture human insulin and other biotech products. Participants use restriction enzymes and bacteria transformation to clone a jellyfish gene and then purify the resulting green fluorescent protein (GFP) from the transformants.

    Chemistry: Summer "Pre-Chemistry" Camp  This dynamic, week-long residential program (July 11-16, 2010) in Alfred University provides a great head start for students aged 13-15 who are interested in science but have not yet taken a high school chemistry class.

    Oxbridge Academic Programs. Summer study abroad - variety of science courses for junior high and high school students in Oxford, Cambridge, Paris, Montpellier and Barcelona.

    Science Exploration Camp at Stony Brook University is a laboratory-based exciting science program that will complement the students' science curriculum and challenge them to think, research and experiment. Open for students entering 7th, 8th or 9th grade. 

    WiE CHEER (CHEmical Engineering Rocks!)  (Female Students only) is a six-day, residential summer program for young women who are going into grade 9 in the fall following the camp.
