This year long course is designed to teach students social skills, communication skills and daily living skills that are necessary for personal, vocational and post-secondary success.In order to ensure skill acquisition, this highly structured course is delivered in a small group that is facilitated by a Speech-language Pathologist and a Special Education Teacher. The Special Education Teacher utilizes a teaching process that sets the stage for learning, plans for relevant exemplars, and fosters an understanding of skills through reinforcement,repetition, and mastery of learning. The Speech-Language Pathologist helps students develop deeper understanding of social relations and social communication while also helping students decode and encode related pragmatic skills. The Speech-Language Pathologist incorporates students Individual Education Plan Goals into real life situations to facilitate the generalization of skills. Each task includes a language focus designed to increase receptive and expressive vocabulary relevant to the target situation and a relevant social skill.
